Newcomer is a Microsoft MVP, an award presented to a fairly small group of people who help out on a volunteer basis on the Microsoft newsgroups. He has been an Adjunct Senior Systems Scientist at Carnegie Mellon University (2001), where he taught the Internet course in the Master of Science in E-Commerce (MSEC) program.
